Our own stories…

This quoted section is from a short story entitled “Ghosts of Wind and Shadow” from Charles de Lint’s book Waifs and Strays:

“There are no happy endings,” Cerin told her. “There are no real
endings ever–happy or otherwise. We all have our own stories which are
just a part of the one Story that binds both this world and Faerie.
Sometimes we step into each other’s stories–perhaps just for a few
minutes, perhaps for years–and then we step out of them again. But all
the while, the Story just goes on.”

I like the idea behind
this passage, that we are all part of a story, but the instances in our
lives don’t necessarily define the story because we are just small
pieces of a much larger whole. I love the idea of walking in and out of
people’s stories and other people walking in and out of mine. Those
steppings can change the scope of our individual stories, even if they
are brief. There are so many people whose stories intersected (or are
intersecting) mine for a time, and I am forever grateful for the impact
they have had, or are having on me. We all have so much to learn from
each other.
