Buffy-a-thon…
I have a friend who is, shall we say it mildly, a lover of all things Buffy…the vampire slayer Buffy. Now, I have watched the occasional episodes on television when it was late at night and it stumbled across the screen, I know the basic characters and can (given some of the shows I love) appreciate the cheeseball fun of them. So, when listening to this friend go on about something to do with Buffy, I put forth the challenge: One night, best season, make me a convert.
So, last night, four women (okay, make that three, as "one who cannot be named" fell asleep early on and does not get any credit), a lot of food, a lot of Pepsi (and Orangina) and a remote sat down at 6pm and watched 10 episodes of Buffy. No, we didn’t make it through a whole season as we got a late start. But by 3am this morning we had gotten through 2 episodes of season 5 (deemed pivotal for the understanding of season 6) and 8 episodes of season six…including…please insert drumroll…
A MUSICAL.
Yes, a musical. A Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical. And, two members of the Buffy-a-thon, obviously the other two who were NOT sleeping, and what will become obvious, the two who are addicts, KNEW ALL THE WORDS. While the musical was near the end of the evening, I just had to get that out. I’m still in shock. But a deeper confession is coming. You see, I grew up on musicals. We didn’t have a television (I never had one from 6th grade until I was married–and I am quite sure that my parents made this choice just to protect me from things like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER MUSICALS), anyway, because we didn’t have a television, we would rent a projector from the library and you could get movies on reels. We watched all the good musicals, Sound of Music, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, West Side Story, Easter Parade, and every Fred Astaire known to man, as a few examples. I love musicals for the sheer weight of good childhood memories, I love Moulin Rouge, love the Phantom of the Opera movie, and I have to confess I loved the Buffy Musical. It was a riot, and I have to give the cast members (only two of which sounded like they had any musical background) credit for putting themselves out there. I certainly haven’t laughed that much in some time.
As to whether I have been made a convert, that is for the next post, I just had to get that out, that there is a Buffy musical.

Well, another Buffy lover in the making! I have no doubt you will come to the dark side and align yourself with the witty, philosophical, (popular) Buffy fans! What a great time, and how refreshing to see a girl kicking but and being in charge and being a positive role model…and yet still go through everyday problems, like sleeping with a vampire, saving her sister from a hellgod, things like that! When it comes down to it, we are all just as self-absorbed as Buffy, we just don’t want to admit it. Try as we may, we will never overcome it. I wish I had a vampire for a boyfriend and a super-witch for a friend :)Rachael
What fun! I loved the movie but have only seen a few of the TV episodes. I could totally fall for Angel though. Mmmm.
I LOVE Buffy, especially the musical! And, yes, I know the words and own the songbook because I’m a geek like that. There’s a season seven episode with Anya singing, and a couple earlier ones with Giles singing. Hope you keep watching!
Welcome to the Buffy club. You might not be completely addicted (yet) but give it time and a few more episodes… I, unfortunately, don’t get to watch as much as I used to because voilent TV during the day is out of bounds because of my two little rugrats (2 1/2 years and 3 months) I can honestly say that I’m not a huge fan of the musical episode… It was a bit TOO cheezy for me… but ask your friend if you can see the episode Hush. I can’t remember which season it’s in, but it’s probably the creepiest episode ever made… and one of the few that the writers were nominated for an Emmy for… which is funny because there’s almost NO dialogue during the entire episode. What I was going to say is, you mentioned that only a few of the cast sounded like they had any musical training… I’m assuming you meant Anthony Stewart Head who plays Giles. You might also recognise him (in North America) as the Tasters Choice guy from the neighbours series of commercials back in the mid/late 80s. He also played Dr. Frank’n'Furter (or Frankie) in a 1990 and 1995 revival of The Rocky Horror Show in West End London. Also starring Craig Ferguson (Mr Wick from Drew Carey and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson) as Brad. Talk about a GREAT musical…. *sings offkey* Let’s do the time warp again!!!
